QUEST VITAMIN C TIMED RELEASE - THE ALTERNATIVE TO... WINTER LURGIES

Is it just me, or does winter come around faster these days than it used to? Well, not exactly winter yet but you know what I mean – it’s certainly lurking around the corner. Next thing you know, they’ll be fiddling with the clocks again.

Still, it is a timely reminder to begin supporting your immune system before everybody starts coughing and sneezing around you. At Elixir, we are already seeing an increase in people wanting to protect themselves against the dreaded winter lurgies, which tend to work their way through the whole family.

The Quest range of Vitamin C products is designed to support the varying needs of the population, they are high potency and contains additional bioflavanoids which help increase vitamin C absorption by up to 35%. Personally, I particularly like the way Quest’s time release formula prolongs the delivery of the vitamin for a period of six hours, giving prolonged tissue saturation.

However, there is a lot more to the humble vitamin C than meets the eye. It is the primary antioxidant within the watery areas of the body, and though water-soluble vitamin C also protects blood fat and cholesterol from oxidative damage.

Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of collagen (good for both your skin and joints), as well as adrenal hormones, which explains its anti-stress association. A severe deficiency in vitamin C can lead to scurvy – if only Captain Scott had known! – which has symptoms that are associated with the defective formation of collagen.

Vitamin C gives protection against cardiovascular disease, and helps to raise HDL (good) cholesterol which in turn aids the removal of LDL (bad) cholesterol from arteries.

Because of the detoxifying effect of vitamin C, it is probably the most important supplement for smokers. It also offers cell protection, which is useful to all of us.

Vitamin C is essential to the connective tissue of the eyes, which is very susceptible to free radical damage and oxidation; potentially leading to disorders such as cataracts or macular degeneration. Vitamin C may also offer protection against diabetic eye damage, by inhibiting sugar-induced damage of the eye tissue.

Another important role of vitamin C is connective tissue health and the way it promotes healing of tissue throughout the body. For example, post-operative supplementation has been shown to improve recovery time due to accelerated tissue healing and reduction of inflammation.

You may also find you suffer less from allergic conditions such as hayfever or eczema whilst taking vitamin C, due to its ability to lower histamine levels.
